Double headed train no. 122 under both semaphore and searchlight signal bridge
Subject
Steam M&E Train
Description
This steam-wreathed Niagara, in charge of mail and express train no. 122, is swinging onto the six-track tangent which leads from tower 50 directly to Central Terminal. Since no. 122 will be yarded in Curtiss Street, on the north side of the mains, it is routed here onto the northernmost of the eastward mains, track 4. Track 6, nearest the camera, is primarily a freight main, while track 2, the third one over, is the principal lane for passenger trains. There is an appreciable grade for eastbound movements here, and the 6002 is bending to her task, with the rear end of the 24-car train around a sharp curve to the left. The signal bridge carries home signals for both tower 50 (the color lights) and tower 49A (the semaphores), these towers being only three tenths of a mile apart. The signal ahead of the 6002 is a Pennsylvania position-light type controlled by tower 49A and governing PRR movements across the NYC.
