Description
The six-track main extending west from the terminal divides at tower 50, one and three-tenths miles from tower 49. In the interim, it is bisected by a single-track line of the Pennsylvania, which runs from their yards to their freighthouse and sundry warehouses near the downtown area. The interlocking at this junction is called 49A, and the tower is set back from the tracks (at left, above). The westbound train on main 1 in the foreground is no. 137, fifteen cars of mail and express behind engines 6001 and 5204, while in the background on main 2, TH&B no. 374 heads for the terminal behind CPR engine 2398. In addition to crossover movements, tower 49A handles the diverging moves of Pennsylvania passenger trains, which back in and out of Central Terminal over the NYC. The diamond is out of sight, a couple of carlengths ahead of no. 137.
