Title

Train X-35 and train no. 379

Subject

Steam M&E Train

Description

At Fillmore Street, the extreme west end of the terminal interlocking, the leads from Lindy and Curtiss Street yards converge and join the mains, which total six here and are numbered, from right to left, 6-5-2-1-4-3. The multiple trackage makes it possible, on occasion, to obtain a double-barrelled action shot such as this one. On the left, mail and express train X-35, with its 22 cars doubleheaded by engines 6003 and 5445, pulls out of Curtiss street onto main 3. On the right, no. 379, an afternoon run to Toronto via the TH&B, heads west on main 1. The terminal tower is framed by the exhausts of X-35's doubleheader (an imbalance of train movements makes it necessary to work excess power from Buffalo to Cleveland). No. 379's engine is a Hudson type, the 502, formerly a member of the NYC's J-1 class.
