Description
No. 351, the Detroit section of the 'Empire', has just left the terminal - its westward progress is faintly discernible in the upper right corner - and the befogged atmosphere testifies to the combustion of its J-1 engine. Immersed in the murk is the fan of tracks constituting the west approach, together with the governing interlocker, tower 49. Across the mains from the tower is the Stock yard, with the rear end of XN-4 cabbed on a track called '2 Coal Yard'. Just behind the tower is Lindy yard, alongside the Railway Express Agency building which it serves. Next comes Curtiss Street yard, serving the Post Office Annex. This building, in the lower right corner, is joined to the terminal itself via an extension which houses the NYC's sizeable Car Records Department. Curtiss Street, next to the parked cars, runs through the terminal in a subterranean passage.
