Title
Train no. 416
Subject
Steam Locomotive
Description
Approaching Indianapolis from the west, the Indiana Division main line turns due south in the vicinity of West 60th Street and, in a long tangent, runs through open country to West 16th Street before it finally curves eastward again towards the center of the city. This apparent indifference to the commercial enterprise -- and resultant traffic -- which are usually found in built-up areas is, of course, not that at all, but the result of the severe street crossing problem which plagued the former single-track main line through the northwest part of the city. A disastrous wreck in 1912 hastened the decision to build a new double-track approach free of grade crossings. The stretch above at the Lafayette Road overpass is part of this relocation. The train, racing towards Indianapolis at the maximum permissible speed of 79 MPH, is no. 416, headed by J-3 Hudson no. 5436.
