Description
After picking up at Middletown, train BF-5, headed by the 3043, eases through the depot on the last lap of its work-filled run from Bellefontaine to Cincinnati. This train, also known as no. 193, is the principal through pickup run on this part of the division. It is followed at an interval of eight or ten hours by one or more sections of CL-1, another working train sometimes known as no. 191. (How many trains and facilities on the Big Four have more than one designation?) On its way out of Middletown, the 81 cars of BP-5 will clatter across the PRR diamond at M&C Junction, 0.7 miles west of the depot, and gather speed past the awesome fumes, clamor, and just plain size of the Arnco plant, 1.1 miles further. Armco consumes vast quantities of raw materials, most of which are hauled in by rail, but the NYC's percentage of this traffic is not substantial. The coal arrives via PRR and the stone via B&O; only the ore, during the lake shipping season, comes via NYC, and even this is shared with the B&O on an alternate-month basis. Still, the Armco ore business adds considerably to the grand total of traffic derived by the Ohio Division in this productive area.
