Description
The Cincinnati Terminal operation is one of the most interesting of all on the New York Central System - a large statement, of course, because the Central's big terminals are many and varied in the numerous cities it enters. The operation at Cincinnati is set apart from the others by its interchange problems and the cross-river transfers which cope with them, by its dependence on trackage rights, by its beautiful Union Terminal, by its widely-separated major classification yards, and by other facets too numerous to mention, but which it is hoped many be evident in some of the pictures which follow. The largest and most important single facility in the terminal is Sharon yard, at its extreme eastern (or northern) limit, where all Ohio Division freight trains except ON-1 and ON-2 arrive or depart. Sharon, by the way, is the largest yard on the Big Four, with a capacity of somewhat over 4,000 cars. This picture was taken from the second floor of the main yard office at Sharon, looking north. In the foreground, idling on the hump lead, is the westbound hump engine, H-7 2-8-2 no. 1951. The yard in the background is the westbound receiving, called Gano yard because of the proximity of its upper end to the community of that name. The eight tracks in this yard, two of which are usually left open as running tracks for engines and cabooses, will hold from 110 to 135 cars. Coming out of track one, having left the head end of an extra from Bellefontaine there, are diesels 1679-2444-1647; they will go back and pull their rear end into track two. The boxcars on the right are on one of two cleaning tracks. The main line east coils to the left along the base of the low hill as it ascends Mauds Hill grade out of the valley of Mill Creek.
