Description
After an interval of about three minutes, the 3107 rolled x-447 out of Springfield depot to meander after no. 303 down to Cincinnati, the final terminal of both trains. The "Cincinnati Division'' between Springfield and Ivorydale Junction in Cincinnati is double track except for the 3.4 miles between West End and Cold Springs and some short stretches near Dayton. The tower at Cold Springs, at the lower end of the Erie cutoff from Glen Echo, handles West End by remote control. The double track between Cold Springs and Tates Point, about 10 miles, is paired with the Erie, the latter owning the westbound main and the Big Four the eastbound. This territory is under the control of the NYC dispatcher at Springfield, unlike the paired track between Galion and Marion, which is controlled by the Erie dispatcher at Marion. Until early in 1958, the Ohio Division was run by three dispatchers, whose jurisdictions were as follows: the east end or "Cleveland Division" man had from Berea to Bellefontaine and from Burt (Galion) to Columbus; the west end or "B-Line" or "Sandusky Division" man (choose one ) had from Bellefontaine to Eastwood (Indianapolis) and Bellefontaine to Sandusky, plus the St. Mary's branch; and the south end or "Cincinnati Division" man had from Bellefontaine to Ivorydale Junction, Columbus to Springfield, the Delaware branch, and the Cincinnati Northern. The number of dispatchers has now been reduced to tvo, one of whom has the entire main line from Berea to Eastwood and from Burt to Columbus, plus the two branches, leaving the other the territory from Sandusky 211 the way to Cincinnati, Columbus to Springfield, and the Cincinnati Northern.
