Description
After EMD switchers had bumped them in 1949, thirty-three of the IHB's H-5 class 2-8-2s were transferred down to the Big Four for local freight work. They were identifiable by their injector controls, which were outside the cab, and by their tenders, which had cutaway coal bunkers to permit better visibility during backup movements. Backing up was not as customary on the Big Four as it was on the IHB, but Big Four enginemen probably appreciated this feature nonetheless, especially when the ex-IHB maulers found their way into yard service. (The Big Four used H-5s as yard engines at outlying points such as Greensburg, Wabash, and Lafayette on the Indiana Division and Petersburg, Cairo, and Hillsboro on the Illinois Division. This made it possible to work the engines into: maintenance terminals on local freight runs.) The IHB transferee below, numbered 1453 on the NYC (ex IHB 408), is on the South Anderson turntable enroute to the yard to pick up the Greensburg switch run.
