Description
This photograph is the first of a sequence of six referred to in the introduction and taken at Anderson in April of 1956. The scene at South Anderson roundhouse was sad but typical of such places after 'dieselitis' had set in - engines still under steam, creaky and filthy but hissing and panting in weary defiance against the gloomy backdrop of the dead.....rusting, rotting hulks whose presence served as a grim omen of the inevitable fate awaiting the survivors. The simmering front end belongs to H-6 no. 6306, resting unassigned with fire banked. The corpse is that of the 5446, one of the greatest 4-6-4s of all time and once a regular on the 'Century' in streamlined splendor. Her end came after she had labored, game to the core but overmatched and down on her knees, across the 40-MPH Michigan District with a drag freight.
