Train no. 473 passing tri-color mast signal
Subject
Steam M&E Train
Description
Dual-service 4-8-2 no. 3022 dissipates excess steam at Bellefontaine station on a chilly spring morning in 1953. She is attached to no. 473, the Cleveland-St. Louis mail and express train, which was running on this occasion with nine cars. The rear end of 473's opposite, no. 472, can be seen under Sandusky Street bridge as it moves up the hill to the east. Chillicothe Street is in the foreground, and the present depot is just forward of the right smoke deflector on the 3022. The word "present" is used because the original depot, which was located in the vicinity of the parking lot on the left, burned down in 1946 (for some reason, fires seem to thrive here, having consumed first the roundhouse, then the depot, and most recently the abandoned coal dock). The rather dilapidated structure which now serves as depot was formerly a combination bunk room and car inspectors' shanty. The signal is the westbound home at es, where the two main lines cross and connect with each other in two wyes.
