Description

The 5363 presents her classic front end to the camera at Shelby Street engine terminal, Indianapolis, in March of 1956. This engine came to the Big Four from St. Thomas, Ont, and once bore Michigan Central number 8218. She ran out her last miles over the midwestern flatlands, and in the course of this service she became the last steam engine out of st. Louis Union Station, departing with no. 472 on February 23, 1956. Later, she had another, even greater distinction, that of being the last J-1 in active service on the New York Central. She closed out activities for her class on a freight run from Indianapolis to Terre Haute and return (doubleheaded with the 5441) on March 15, 1956, returning to Shelby Street at 4:40 AM on the 16th to have her fire drawn forever.
