Title

Engineer's side showing cab and cab curtain

Subject

Steam Locomotive

Description

How many engineers have had their faces pitted and creased as they peered out of this aperture for mile after mile at high speed? How many have cursed this machine for bucking them, searing them, deafening them, while yet marvelling at the way she took off with a heavy train and held it at the maximum? How many kids have frowned in youthful concentration as they worked on models of her prototype? (The Central's Hudson of the J-1 class has been referred to as the most often-modeled steam locomotive in America.) Specifications of the 5363, class J-1d, are as follows: cylinders, 25x28 in.; drivers, 79 in.; pressure, 225 lbs.; tractive effort, 42, 300 lbs., plus 10,900 lbs. from booster; weight, 309, 900 lbs.; builder, Alco in 1929.
