Description
The double-tracked main line of the Ohio Division is a straight shot out of Berea for 68 miles to Galion. At the latter point it forks, with a single track heading south-southwest to Columbus and two tracks bending more to the west towards Bellefontaine. Between Galion and Marion, the line to Bellefontaine is operated under a paired-track agreement with the Erie, whereby the NYC main track is used by eastbound trains of both roads and the Erie by west bounds. Burt tower at Galion governs the junction of the NYC and Erie at the east end of this stretch, as well as the branching of the NYC here. The picture was taken facing west along the NYC double track at the westbound home signal at Burt. Number 472, a St. Louis-Cleveland mail and express train, is swinging off the paired track behind J-1 no. 5293. The line to Columbus runs straight ahead and crosses the Erie at grade a short distance vest of the location above (the tower, hidden behind some of no. 472's eleven cars, perches on its stilts in the southeast corner of this diamond). In addition to being a Junction point, Galion is also a terminal with an engine house and an 11-track yard from which local freights are dispersed in all three directions. The yard is about a mile and a half east of Burt.
