Description
Last of the Cleveland series, this picture shows no. 433, the previously mentioned afternoon train to Cincinnati, being hustled past Short Line Junction by L-3a 4-8-2 no. 3022. In a little over four miles and seven minutes' running time from Short Line, no. 433 will have threaded through a portion of one of the best-known and most important interlockings on the system before passing onto Ohio Division rails for the run southwest. The interlocking referred to is, of course, Berea, where the Big Four and the Lakefront converge, swap some trains with each other, then continue west as the main lines of the Ohio and Toledo Divisions, respectively. The 111-lever plant here is undoubtedly one of the toughest exercises in judgment, coordination, poise, and just plain hustle imposed by the NYC on one lone operator. The following photographs will illustrate some of the traffic which the Ohio Division pours east to contribute to the hullabaloo at Berea, easternmost anchor of the Big Tour District.
