Subject
Steam Freight Train
Description
Extra 3064 west pulls into Marion with 77 cars, near the west end of the 21-mile stretch of paired track out of Galion (this train is on the Erie; the NYC main is in the foreground. Marion, an industrial city with a population of about 35,000, is well-known for its manufacturing of power shovels and other earth-digging equipment (there are three plants in town which make these products). One of its many other industries is the McMillen Feed Mills, whose establishments rear up in the background below and in the following picture. There is also a large government storage depot a few miles east of town along the Erie-NYC right of way. Business is divided among four railroads - NYC, Erie, C&O, and PRR - but the Big Four's share is nevertheless substantial. It has been handled variously over the years by turnaround locals out of Galion, through locals between Galion and Bellefontaine, and a Marion-assigned yard engine with through freights making the pickups and setouts.
