Title

Train no. 73 at Central Union Terminal

Subject

Steam Passenger Train

Description

A last look at handsome Central Union Terminal finds J-3 no. 5411 in the final stages of preparation for departure on no. 73, an afternoon train from Cleveland to Chicago. Up front, a mechanical department laborer is disconnecting the grease gun air supply hose from the engine air valve on the pilot, and back on the tender the fireman is about to swing the waterplug spout back into standby position. Central's speed queen will soon be unleashed for her 133-mile sprint to Elkhart, broken in this case by a stop at Bryan, 53.6 miles out. The extra plume of steam vapor behind her marks B&O Pacific 5205, about ready to head for Detroit with the "Cincinnatian."
