Description

On the west side of the footbridge, the scene includes a portion of the Panama yard in the foreground and (beyond the shanty) the hump yard, in which two U-class engines are working (at the time, this yard was devoted primarily to storage of grain and class repair cars). Mohawk no. 2727 is getting under way out of Detroit yard with a 40-car Michigan Central puller bound for the Wagon Works industrial area. The "high green" on the home signal indicates a clear route across the westbound freight running track, which extends from Swan Creek to the "New" yard (the westbound yard at Airline). "Z" tower in the center background controls this crossing. MC main tracks run in front of the boxcars in the right background and Airline Junction engine terminal is in the extreme left background.
