Train no. 73

Subject

Steam Locomotive

Description

The blue-flagged 5411 gets another shot of grease at Elkhart while her engineer for the last lap to Chicago packs a few belongings into the seatbox. Notwithstanding the stop at Bryan, the 133 miles from Toledo were run off in 117 minutes for an average speed of 68 MPH. Though the distances are shorter, more high speed running lies ahead -- e.g., 32.6 miles from Laporte to Gary in 30 minutes for an average of 65.2 MPH. This closes out the pre--Perlman section of this album, in which the Central's railroad operations, many of them highly commendable, have been depicted against a backdrop of an oversized and outdated physical plant.
