Description
Train PW-4, a Youngstown-DeWitt schedule, rolls through Newark, N.Y., on the West Shore main track. Alco units 1071-3372-1046 are trailing 83 loads and 14 empties. In the past ten years the West Shore has been nearly obliterated between Wayneport, 15 miles east of Rochester, and the west side of Syracuse. Two short segments, one at Macedon and one here at Newark, have been retained to serve industries. The Newark segment is orphaned from the main line and is reached via trackage rights over the Pennsylvania's Sodus Point branch. When this photograph was made, the West Shore between Wayneport and Syracuse was used as a supplemental route for eastbound drag freights such as PW-4 (it was signalled for eastward movements only).
