Title

On outbound engine tracks

Subject

Steam Locomotive

Description

This isn't something out of Hollywood, nor does it mean that the NYC has extended its operations into desert territory; it is an outgoing engine track at the East Syracuse terminal, smoke from which darkens an otherwise unclouded evening sky. Engine no.2960 is a class L-2d Mohawk, Alco 1929, one of a dwindling number of NYC freight-haulers still carrying steel pilots instead of footboards. She is coupled to sister engine no.2992 ahead of her for a doubleheaded westbound run, while class L-2a engine no.2754 behind her is called for a similar run, leaving somewhat earlier.
