Description

Here are some facilities and activities of gravity switching at the NYC's DeWitt Yards, East Syracuse. Both east- and westbound humps are on the other side of the highway overpass which is just out of sight to the left. Diesel switcher no.8528 has almost finished shoving a long string over the westbound hump, assisted by cabless auxiliary no.453 ahead, which is nothing but an electric-motor unit run with electricity generated by the 8528. The Santa Fe’s diesel no.2367 looks idly on while awaiting shipment west to her parent company. The two towers control retarders on tracks leading from the eastbound hump, and the substantial brick structure in the left background is the general yard office. Passenger main is in the right foreground.
