Description
The eastbound yard at Suspension Bridge is called Days yard, or sometimes Sugar Street yard. Though it has fewer tracks (thirty two) than Lockport Street yard, its tracks are longer and their capacities add up to a total of about 2000 cars. This yard handles eastbound hotshots off the MC (CD-4, JS-2, WD-4), and breaks up MC extras, interchange cuts, and transfers from the westbound yard. From cars switched out of the latter, the yard makes up two trains each for Syracuse and Newberry Junction, two intradivisional runs to East Buffalo and Gardenville, and two switch runs to Medina on the Falls Road and Charlotte on the Ontario Branch (usually referred to as the 'Ho jack'). Some of the longest tracks are used to relieve Lockport Street yard from the task of yarding long westbound empty trains. These move fairly regularly and are known as 'VWNs', because they are made up at Selkirk in groups for Windsor and Niles. The picture here was taken from Sugar Street bridge, looking east. It shows part of Days yard, the engine tracks, and (at the extreme right) a corner of the Suspension Bridge YMCA. Note the MCRR Canada Division hacks lined up to go back west.
