Description
This picture is complimentary to the one just preceding it. Taken from the aforementioned Sugar Street bridge, it shows the east end the of Lockport Street yard and (in the left background) Lockport Street overpass, the vantage point for the two preceding shots. The cut being switched in the foreground is the rear end of the previously photographed MC extra, which had pulled into the eastbound section of Suspension Bridge yard. The latter will be discussed in connection with another picture. The caboose is on the tail end of HS-3, a Newberry Junction-Suspension Bridge freight operated via the Falls Road. This train has been yarded on the westward main track, which is standard practice in the case of most of the longer trains arriving from that direction. Westbound freights off the Falls Branch tend to be shorter, and are yarded on the south side of the yard (towards the left, above). In addition to its functions as a westbound yard, Lockport Street also handles cars for local industries, which are numerous and include Stauffer Chemical, National Carbon, Vanadium Corporation of America, Autolite, and others (plus of course, the chemical empire of Union Carbide-Hooker-Dupont, etc., in Niagara Falls).
