Description
Suspension Bridge yard is divided into two sections by Sugar Street, which crosses the yard on the bridge in the right background (the camera has about-faced on Lockport Street overpass to record this easterly view). The section shown here is called Lockport Street yard and consists of 40 tracks, the longest of which holds 58 cars, with a total capacity of about 1500 cars. This is primarily the westbound yard, where trains from the east are switched or broken up and westbound trains are made up. It is also used to make up interchange cuts, most of which are westbound in some manner - that is, all but those for the Niagara Junction Railway at its Toote yard depart westbound from the yard, and most are bound for westerly destinations, e.g., cuts for the Lehigh Valley, Michigan Central, C&O, and CNR-Wabash. The main tracks skirt the north side of the yard, and in the scene above, an extra off the Michigan Central, its rear end in the left foreground, is bypassing the yard on the eastward main, The Alco switcher is making up BB-5, whose EMD power waits at right.
