Description
The Lackawanna's Owego-Ithaca branch was the second railroad chartered in New York State(1834 ) and the fourth to be opened to the public. It originally made use of two inclined planes for the drop into Ithaca, but a switchback has long since been substituted. That the branch is not so profitable now as it might be is indicated by this shot of its one daily freight leaving Ithaca with a meager two-car payload. The picturesque little 2-8-0 type at its head was turned out by the Schenectady Works in 1909, and lately has been "modernized" odiously by the installation of an air-horn on the smokebox. The railroad crossing is with the Lehigh Valley's Ithaca-Auburn branch.
