Description
On a blisteringly-hot and muggy August day, the head-end crew of symbol freight SBH-2 has opened the nose door on the lead unit of their Alco 'three-bagger' (nos. 1055-3337-1054), apparently in an attempt to create more draft. This train, an afternoon run out of Suspension Bridge for Corning and Newberry Junction, now consists of 35 cars (it will pick up at HC yard in East Buffalo) and is headed south on the Falls Branch near tower 55 in Black Rock, Tower 55, known as North Buffalo Junction, is a quarter of a mile north of tower Hand 8.01 miles north of tower 50. It governs the junction of the north leg of the Belt Branch wye with the Falls Branch, and also marks the beginning of the Wonalancet Branch, an industrial spur about three miles long serving a multitude of industries near the Niagara River in Black Rock and Harriett. The Wonalancet Branch track parallels the Falls Branch mains for about a mile before turning west toward the river - in this picture, it is the track on the extreme left. The two spurs on the right lead back to the huge feed mill of the Eastern States Farmers Exchange. The latter is one of the largest NYC customers in the Buffalo territory.
