Description

From the west window of the yard office at Military Road in Black Rock, we can look out upon the incessant beehive of activity in and around Military Road yard. At this point, the Falls and Belt Branches join in a wye, at the base of which are the Falls Branch mains. The legs of the wye separate at 'I' interlocking, which is barely out of sight on the right. The south leg curves around in front of the camera (the 600-h.p. EMD switcher is on the eastward main of this leg, waiting for the block at 'I' home signal, on top of the bracket). The north leg bends out of sight in the extreme right corner, to the right of the white diesel shed. To complicate matters, an Erie belt line parallels the south leg of the wye and crosses the Falls Branch at tower H, whose superstructure protrudes above and beyond the cab of the steam engine in the foreground. The Alco switcher in the background behind the lower home signal (Erie) is southbound on the Falls Branch. The steamer, a G-46 class 2-8-0, is delivering a MC transfer cut from Victoria, Ontario, in Military Road yard. The latter, consisting of nineteen short tracks, is built along the inside curvature of the south leg of the wye.
