Description
This picture begins the fourth and final series, illustrating the section of the Buffalo Division known as the Niagara Falls branch, which extends 27 miles from tower 50 in Buffalo to tower 65 in Suspension Bridge. Here is engine 5238 leading a Toronto train, no. 379, onto Falls Branch track 1 at tower 50. The rear end of the eight-car train is still in the six-track sector between tower 50 and the west end of Central Terminal at tower 49 (a westbound Lines West train was shown at this location in the fifteenth picture in this album). From tower 50 to tower 52, 0.57 miles, the Falls Branch is four-tracked; tracks 3 and 4, visible here to the left of the locomotive, are really freight leads connecting with the trackage at Carroll Street freighthouse. Tower 51, 0.32 miles west of tower 50 and 0.25 miles east of tower 52, is the interlocking at the west end of the wye where the Falls Branch and Lines West connection join. This tower also governs a crossing with an Erie spur leading to the joint Erie-Nickel Plate-C&O freighthouse.
