Title
West end of Gardenville Branch
Subject
Diesel Freight train
Description
The west end of the Gardenville branch is at Bayview, where the two branch tracks are assimilated into the four mainline tracks leading out of Buffalo. Actually, the branch and the mainline have by that time been running alongside one another for about two miles from Blasdell to Bayview, branch mains 5 and 6 are the outside tracks along a six-track stretch. The freight above is coming off this stretch onto the four-track right-of-way of the Erie Division. Its lead diesel unit is on Erie Division main 3, but back by the signal bridge, its cars are on Gardenville branch main 5 (at that point, the Buffalo Division mains are numbered 5, 3, 4, 1, 2, and 6). The freight itself is VEG-37, with 7 loads and 130 empties, pulled by units 1846-2448-1847. The symbol means that this is a train made up in Selkirk Yard for Elkhart and Gibson, and that it is the nineteenth such train run on this particular month (the trains are counted on a month-to-month basis, using odd numbers only). These trains are known, because of their symbols, as 'vegetables'.
