Description
The position-light signals identify the three-track railroad here as the Pennsylvania. The double track is the NYC, and the location is Gardenville Junction, which is approximately the midpoint of the Gardenville branch (the mainline connection at Depew is 6.08 miles east and Bayview is 6.79 miles west). This crossing divides the north- and southbound sections of the PRR's large Ebenezer Yard, and from our position on the steps of the tower, we can see a PRR freight pulling out of the southbound yard, headed for Oil City and Pittsburgh. This train will run west alongside the Gardenville branch tracks until it curves south to head onto the Nickel Plate at Blasdell. The PRR tracks leading out of the picture on the right go to downtown Buffalo (and cross the NYC main line at tower 49A, previously pictured in this album); they also run to Black Rock via trackage rights over the DL&W, and to the port area via the Buffalo Creek. The Pennsylvania does a good business hauling grain from Buffalo's elevators, and otherwise enjoys a favorable freight traffic position in this territory.
