Title

Gardenville extra

Subject

Diesel Freight train

Description

This section of the Gardenville branch, photographed from Rowley Road bridge, is about a mile west of tower 46. The train is an extra from DeWitt, pulled by Alcos 1043-3323. It consists of 65 empty gons and hoppers, which will be classified at Gardenville for the satisfaction of division car orders and for further movement westward. The home signal governing the eastward main at the outset of the curve is controlled from tower 46 and is called GV. Its location at this point probably reflects the thinking of signal engineers that it would be better to have a heavy eastbound drag stopped here, where the right of way is comparatively level, than up by tower 46, where the going is tough. In the meantime, dieselization has alleviated this problem to a great extent (it was formerly necessary to shove eastbound freights from Gardenville to at least Depew).
