Description
There is usually enough activity to be seen from Bayview tower to satisfy the average rail enthusiast, whether he looks at the Erie Division from the west window (as here), the Buffalo Division from the east window, or the Nickel Plate from the back windows. He will not, however, see this kind of machine on the NYC anymore, with a feather of steam at its safety valves and feedwater heater exhaust - his only sad reminder would be one of those lugubrious dead-in-train, boneyard-bound movements. (The NKP's 700-series 2-8-4s still soot up the tower roof every time one of their freights goes by.) Engine 5263 is being crossed over here from track 4 to track 2, with a string of 30 deadhead standard Pullmans following her. This train will terminate in South yard, next to Central Terminal. It is quite a load for a J-1, hence the Erie Division dispatcher has been keeping it on the freight track, out of the way of the eastbound limiteds.
