Description
The weather is sunny and mild at 4:36 PM on an August afternoon. Looking down at the west end of the terminal from our vantage point, we see (on track 23) the departure of no. 383 for Toronto, with its red-trimmed, gold-lettered CPR Pacific, no. 2398, headed into the tangie of dwarfs and power switches of the throat, referred to as the 'field' by terminal railroaders. After 383's departure, there is a considerable lull (for this spot) until the arrival of the West Side Express Special at 5:00 PM. During this sojourn, disturbed only mildly by some drawbar-rattling on the part of Job 9 in the stock yard, the summer breeze carries soft-coal scent through the open windows. The CPR'S 2398 is the guilty party, but by this time no. 383 is downtown at Exchange Street, receiving another contingent of Canada-bound passengers.
