Passenger Station
Description
The view south from the tower includes, most notably, the long station concourse, which extends out over thoroughfares 3 and 4 and station tracks: 11 through 26, counting outward. There are seven platforms, and the tracks can accommodate from 11 to 22 cars. Switching is performed by six round-the-clock engines, three at each end. Beyond track 26 is a passenger storage yard known as South yard, whose tracks run from 27 through 35. Then there is the stock yard, which originates and terminates certain symbol freights (principally those carrying livestock) and handles some interchange traffic. Finally come the stockyards themselves, which are by far the largest facility of their kind on the NYC. Cars are spotted for loading and unloading on the far side (there are five through tracks there, known as MI yard), with room for 36 single-decks or 18 double-decks at a time. This ticklish and deadline-plagued switching operation is the special preserve of the MI yardmaster.
