Description
Here is mainline activity in East Buffalo, viewed looking east from Bailey Avenue bridge. The loaded hoppers in the foreground are some of the 94 cars of XN-4, the rear end of which is still in the Stock yard where the train was made up. Led by Baldwin units 3815-3702, it is about to be shunted from main 8 across the high speed tracks to main 4, for movement east out of the Buffalo area. EMD units 1812-1811 in the background are backing BB-3 into VI yard. Tower 47 is just beyond the signal bridge on the right; its principal function is to shuttle the heavy freight traffic between the VI-HC-West Shore area and the stockyards-Central Terminal area across the passenger mains at this point. This routing is necessary because the former yards are north of the mains, and the latter yards and freight thoroughfares are south of Central Terminal.
