Description
Here is the west end of that section of East Buffalo pocket yards whose east end was shown in the preceding picture. In the center and at right is VI yard, a 19-track pocket whose principal function is handling road freights off the Syracuse Division (one of the latter sets out and picks up, two set out only, and one or two terminate). The yard also takes in transfers from the Pennsylvania and the B&O, and makes up a cut for the Nickel Plate. The only road freight originated here is BB-5, an intradivision run to Suspension Bridge, and this train is in the scene above, ready to depart from track 15 behind a set of Alco diesels. To the left of VI yard is a rip-track facility, known as the 'repair branch', which fixes up bad order freight cars for the entire East Buffalo territory. There is a servicing facility for yard diesels alongside. The picture was taken from the fill of a DL&W belt line running between East Buffalo and Black Rock. The NYC mains parallel VI tracks in the right background (note the signal bridge) and pass under the DL&W line.
