Train no. 405
Subject
Steam Passenger Train
Description
At Delaware Street, two blocks east of the depot, the 3149 eases no. 405 into the interlocking controlled by "A" tower of the IU. To the left is the Pennsylvania's downtown produce yard. In the left background, one block east at Alabama Street, is the "B-line City” yard of the NYC. The latter is a fifteen-track team yard which was formerly used by most of the NYC's customers dealing in perishables. Now, however, a new produce terminal out on the east side near Brightwood has taken the greater portion of this perishable business away from "B-line City", and also from the Pennsylvania yard here. The PRR has converted part of its yard to a parking lot, and this might well be the fate of the NYC facility. Just out of the picture on the right, above, the Louisville line of the Pennsylvania joins the IU at right angles in what is known as the "Jeff wye". All NYC engines too long for the turntable at Shelby Street - presently, the few remaining L-3s and L-4s, and formerly the S-1s and P&LE A-2as - are brought down by main track hostlers or "instruction" crews and turned on this wye. When one of these "big" engines arrived on a westbound Indiana Division passenger train (like the 3149 in this case), the usual procedure was for the crew handling the engine back to Shelby Street to turn it on the wye as they left the depot.
