Description
The section of the Belt Railway west of Belt crossing is as busy or even busier than the section just shown east of the crossing. In the scene above, train CC-1, bound for Kankakee, is pulling out on this part of the Belt for the trip around town, About two thirds of the 66-car train is already on the Belt, and the rest is on the wye connecting with the big hump yard. Right at this point, near Keystone Avenue, there are ten tracks abreast. The three on the right, all stubs, are called the "hammers, and are used by eastbound NYC and P&E freights, enroute around the Belt to Brightwood, for setting out blocks of Hill yard cars. The next pair are Belt mains used principally by NYC trains and Belt transfers, either moving to and from West Hill or stopping here on their way through to make pickups or setouts. The three beyond CC-1's train are Belt sidings used for switching and holding interchange and industrial cars. The pair at the far left are the "high iront of the Belt, used by NYC trains and Belt cuts with no work to do here, and, in addition, by practically all Pennsylvania freight trains of PRR's Louisville, Chicago, and St. Louis lines. The gas and coke plant on the far side of the crossing and the Fairmont-Crunden glass works on this side (behind the locomotive, above) are responsible for the large amount of industrial switching done in this area. The locomotive, incidentally, is another antenna equipped L-2, the 2837.
