Description
One of the busiest junctions on the Belt Railway - and therefore one of the businest in Indianapolis - is Belt crossing, where the Indiana Division main line from Cincinnati crosses the Belt, and also connects with it by means of two wyes. This photograph, made from the steps of the tower, takes in about as much of this junction as possible in one exposure. The Belt has three mains here, one of which is the track running through the bottom of the picture (the other two lie between this one and the camera). The two tracks curving in at the left are the Indiana Division mains. The track diverging from the eastward main just beyond the diamond leads into the west end of the big hump yard. Road diesels 1769-2455-5017 have just backed across the diamond into the yard, and are about to couple onto CC-3 for the run to Kankakee. Sherman Drive bridge, the vantage point for the six preceding pictures, is visible on very close scrutiny down the clear alley to the right of the diesels. The four wye tracks extending from the big hump yard, passing behind the shanty, and curving out of sight at the right form the principal connection with the Belt here. (The white building behind the shanty is West Hill yard office.) - The other wye leaves the Belt to the left of the diamond and runs across the grassy strip in the left background to connect with the main tracks at the icehouse crossovers (the building in the left background is the off-mentioned icehouse).
