Description
Dogged by the camera, the 3127 is shown here for the last time as she eases down six lead toward the icehouse crossovers. The crossovers, where the engine will be switched onto the westbound main, are five telegraph poles beyond the westward distant signal for Belt crossing, which signal is visible slightly to the left of the two-story building in the left-center foreground (the latter is the yard office at Middle Hill).. The Hill yard rip was closed shortly before this was taken, but the rip tracks were still intact and can be seen beyond and to the left of the yard office. The former car department building, now in partial use as the terminal trainmaster's office, is also visible here, between the old rip tracks and the signal at the crest of the hump. The big hump yard shows plainly in the left background. When this was taken, humping operations were just beginning; the cars in the foreground, on four lead, were moving up on the hump, and the first cut was about to be made. The main tracks, incidentally, are on the right, behind the 3127. They curve to the left beyond the icehouse crossovers and intersect the Belt tracks at Belt crossing, which is just beyond the far end of West Hill yard.
