Description
The camera followed the 3127 as she passed under the bridge for the second time, and made this exposure of her as she backed past her train towards six lead. The latter is one of the busiest and most important tracks at the Hill. In this picture, it is briefly visible as the track which emerges from behind the gons at the left and center and disappears beyond the white telephone booth in the right background. It is not one of the westbound receiving tracks, as are the first five hump leads. Rather, it is a thoroughfare, running east from the main line at the icehouse crossovers (to be located in the next picture) to the old main at the east end of the hump leads, and serving as a principal means of access between the various parts of the Hill. It is called six lead because it parallels the other hump leads (running next to five lead) from the above-mentioned telephone booth to the old main. The 3127 will traverse it from the booth to the icehouse crossovers on her way to Shelby Street roundhouse. In addition to light engine movements, six lead accommodates Springfield branch trains inbound to the hump leads and outbound from East Hill, mainline trains off the Kankakee line bound for East Hill, and numerous yard and transfer cuts moving to and from East Hill, the hump leads, and various places around the terminal.
