Description
In this scene at Lafayette depot, the 5402 starts away with the seven cars of no. 419, the westbound local. The passenger and freight stations at Lafayette are operated jointly with the Nickel Plate, whose main tracks are shown in the picture. To gain access to Lafayette, and also to avoid construction of duplicate trackage through the Wabash valley, the NYC contracted for trackage rights over the Frankfort-Peoria line of the NKP (formerly the Lake Erie and Western) between Altamont and Templeton, a distance of 22.4 miles. Actually, the double-track line is paired from Altamont to Walnut Street in Lafayette, about 3.5 miles, with the NYC owning the eastward and the NKP the westward. From Walnut Street to Templeton, both mains are the property of the NKP. The rules and timetable of the NKP govern over the entire distance between Altamont and Templeton.
