Title
Extra east headed to eastern Kentucky
Description
In open country just west of Clarks Hill, the 2800 wheels 69 empty L&N hoppers up the slight eastbound grade. Running as a Sheff turn out of Indianapolis, Extra 2800 is a key part of the operation of moving Eastern Kentucky coal to the U.S. Steel Co. mills at Gary and returning the empties to the mines. Westbound from Indianapolis to Sheff, the train consisted of 47 coal loads (standard L-2 tonnage on this run), which were left for the Western Division to forward to the EJ&E at Hartsdale. The empties picked up at Sheff will be taken over the road to Riverside yard in Cincinnati, then transferred to the L&N at its DeCoursey yard across the Ohio River. The former routing of this 'Gary' coal - from the L&N at Evansville, thence over the Illinois Division through Lynnville, Terre Haute, and Paris to the Western Division at Danville - will be referred to at some length in connection with later photographs.
