Description
Greensburg, 62 miles west of Cincinnati and 47 miles east of Indianapolis, is the operational midpoint of the Indiana Division main line between those cities. As a steam terminal, it had water, sand, a coal dock, an ash pit, and a single-stall 'roundhouse' Its small yard currently makes up locals six days a week for the main line west to Fairland, the branch to Columbus, and the main line east to Riverside (the latter handles some through business; its crew, out of Riverside, takes full rest at Greensburg). It also does whatever switching is necessary on the large number of cars interchanged here between the main line and the Michigan District. It is a stopping place for all passenger trains, albeit conditional for the east and westbound 'Rileys'. For eastbound manifest 1/SY-2, it has been either a 40-MPH timecard restriction or a place to set out hot cars for Louisville, depending on the varying whims of management. When this picture was made, the latter whim had precedence; the setout had been made, water had been taken, and the 3064 was getting into her stride again a mile or so east of town.
