Description
The heavy hump lead as it descends from the apex of the hump appears in the foreground of this picture, taken from the retarder tower. The operator here controls all retarders and switches on the heavy hump - a total of one master retarder (in the foreground), two other double retarders, and fourteen switches. In December, 1953, when the picture was taken, this installation was brand new, having been completed earlier in the same year (the plant at the light hump was built in 1928). A bypass track runs on the fill adjacent to the hump lead. Beyond the embankment on ground level are the two main tracks and the lead at the west end of the light hump yard. The latter is occupied by the 10:45 AM Riverside transfer, departing behind H-7 no. 1988. (This transfer normally picks up at Ivorydale on its way to Riverside, then picks up at both Mill Creek and Ivorydale on its return trip.) Movements such as this one out of the light hump yard are switched onto the main line at West Sharon tower, which is visible behind the automobiles parked at the top of the hump. The fertilizer plant of the Tennessee Copper Company, served by the NYC, is in the distance behind the tower.
