Description
Following in the wake of no. 416 pictured on the preceding page was KI-2, a pickup run from Kankakee to Indianapolis known as the 'Daylighter'. Its modest consist of 42 cars was hustled down the tangent west of town by a grimy L-2, no. 2821. Although, as noted before, this section of the main line was relocated particularly to eliminate grade crossings, which of course it originally succeeded in doing, the current growth of residential suburbs on the west side is beginning to lessen its freedom from highway traffic. Four roads now cross it from West 30th street north, and one of these, West 30th Street itself, is the principal artery between the downtown area and a large new development of homes called 'Eagledale'. The former main line, however, was bisected by one city street after another. A portion of it which still remains - from Georgia Street in the downtown area to 30th Street - is used as an industrial lead and is known, naturally, as the 'Old Main'.
