Description
Number 74’s power, the 3115, backs out on the table at South Anderson. Inside the house are two sister L-4s, the 3132 and 3135, and at Elkhart off no. 74 of the previous day is the 3128. All four were transferred to the Big Four from the Michigan Central when the latter became completely dieselized in 1955. These four engines handled the heavy freight work between South Anderson and Elkhart, including no's. 74 and 75 plus an occasional Wabash or Claypool. turn when business warranted. (The 3132 was indisposed at the time with a punched-out cylinder head, which resulted when she lost her's piston key - recall the fate of the 3148, the subject of earlier discussion. Unlike the unfortunate 3148, the 3132 was repaired and saw considerably more service.) Through freight service between South Anderson and Jeffersonville was dieselized for all intents and purposes in May, 1954, when steam facilities at the latter point were retired. Thereafter, steam was run to Jeff on rare occasions when rush cars or extra business developed and diesels were not immediately available. The 3115 made the last of these emergency trips on April 29, 1956, coaling enroute at Greensburg and watering from a fire hose at Jeff.
