Title

Train BF-5

Subject

Steam Freight Train

Description

After setting off 25 empty 40x10s in Moraine yard, train BP-5 moves down the westbound main behind the 3027. The consist, which has been reduced to 22 cars, will be filled out with about 50 loads from the Frigidaire plant. The yard at Moraine consist of eight tracks, five of which lead off the eastbound main and the other three off the westward passing track (the latter is in the foreground above, and the cars standing in the background, including those set off by BF-5, are on the yard tracks referred to). These tracks, which will hold about 450 cars, are located about a mile east of the plant area. They are used principally to hold empties for loading; the outside tracks on both sides of the mains are cleanout tracks. The westward passing track extends all the way from Sand Cut at the extreme east end of Moraine to Sellers Road at the west end, almost three miles. In the plant area and alongside plant no. 4, two tracks numbered 20 and 21 run off the westward passing track, and these, along with the paralleling portion of the passing track itself, are used to hold cars for westbound trains such as BF-5. These tracks will hold about 180 cars. Two 15-car stub tracks east of plant no. 4 round out the NYC facilities here (the tracks inside the plant area are owned by GM). One yard engine works around the clock at Moraine when production is average or better. Nearly all westbound trains work here except manifests (ON-1 and BF-7) and extras manned by pool crews, who are forbidden by agreement to set out or pick up enroute (except by special proviso at Armco Steel Company in Middletown).
