Title

Wabash switcher pulling out of yard

Subject

Steam Freight train

Description

From a point on the aforementioned south wye at South Anderson, the camera in this instance is trained on engine 6344 and her train, the Wabash local. The head brakeman has just thrown the switch at far right, lining the route for the north vye, over which the train will swing onto the Michigan District main. The junction here between the latter and the belt is protected by a target-gate. Once on the Michigan District, the train will head towards the center of town, paralleling the passenger main of the Ohio Division through the depot and crossing it at KY interlocking, one city block west. In the meantime, it will have crossed a spur of the Pennsylvania SF, and the main line of the Central Indiana, protected by target-gates (more about the C.I. later). The engine below, a U.S.R.A. light 2-8-2 (NYC class H-6, numbered in the 1800 series until diesels preempted those numbers), ended her career right here less than a month after this picture was taken. She arrived at the roundhouse for the last time at 12:15 PM on April 26, 1956, off the very same Wabash switch run, on the following day at 9:40 PM, sister engine 6394 threw in the towel for the H-6 class as she turned in after doubleheading down from Wabash on no. 75.
